Single Phase to Three Phase VFD Buying Guide

A single phase to three phase VFD can operate a compatible three phase motor where only single phase power is available. It also provides speed control, controlled acceleration and motor protection functions.

The key requirement is voltage compatibility. A 220V single phase supply normally requires a motor that can be connected for a compatible three phase output voltage. A VFD does not automatically convert 220V input into standard 380V output unless the model is specifically designed with a voltage boosting stage.

Check the Motor Nameplate First

Look for the motor voltage connection, rated current, power, frequency and speed. A motor marked 220V delta and 380V star can often be connected in delta for use with a 220V three phase VFD output, subject to manufacturer confirmation.

A motor that only supports 380V may require a different solution. Do not change the motor connection unless the nameplate and motor documentation permit it.

Dedicated Single Phase Input Models

The safest choice is a VFD specifically rated for single phase input. Its manual will state the accepted input voltage and the available three phase output.

Some three phase input VFDs can be used with single phase input after substantial derating, but this must be approved by the manufacturer. Single phase input places higher current stress on the input rectifier and DC bus components.

Price Factors

The price depends on:

  • Motor power and rated current
  • Input and output voltage
  • Dedicated single phase design or derated model
  • V F or vector control
  • Braking requirements
  • Communication and accessories
  • Order quantity

Selected low power IDEEI VFD listings currently begin around US$39, but the exact single phase input configuration must be confirmed. Do not assume that the lowest listed model supports the required phase conversion.

How to Size the VFD

Use the motor rated current as the main selection check. The VFD output current must be sufficient for the motor and load. Compressors, loaded conveyors and other high torque machines may need a larger drive than a centrifugal fan or pump.

Also review the input circuit. The single phase supply, breaker and cable must carry the VFD input current. This current can be significantly higher than the current of an equivalent three phase supply.

Suitable Applications

Single phase input VFDs are often used for small pumps, fans, woodworking machines, workshop tools, conveyors and agricultural equipment. They are useful when a location has 220V household or commercial power but the equipment uses a three phase motor.

Suitability still depends on the load. A difficult starting load may exceed the available single phase supply even when a VFD can control the motor.

Wiring Principles

Connect the single phase supply only to the input terminals specified by the manufacturer. Connect the motor to the VFD output terminals. Never install power factor correction capacitors or a contactor that switches the motor between the VFD and the load while the drive is running.

Do not connect the VFD output to a building distribution circuit. The output is intended for the controlled motor or an engineered motor group, not as a general three phase power source.

Electrical work should be completed by qualified personnel according to the product manual and local rules.

Quotation Checklist

Send:

  1. Available input voltage and frequency
  2. Motor nameplate photo
  3. Motor connection information
  4. Load type
  5. Required speed range
  6. Starts and stops per hour
  7. Required quantity
  8. Destination country

If the motor is already installed on a machine, include the existing control method and any braking requirement.

Common Buying Errors

The first error is ordering a 220V VFD for a motor that cannot operate at the corresponding output voltage. The second is selecting by kilowatts without checking current. The third is using a three phase input model on single phase power without approved derating.

A correct nameplate review prevents most of these problems before shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VFD create three phase power from single phase power

Yes, a suitable model can accept single phase AC input and provide controlled three phase output for a compatible motor.

Can a 220V VFD run a 380V motor

Only when the motor connection and VFD output are compatible or when the VFD is specifically designed to provide the required boosted voltage. Check both manuals before selection.

Can the VFD power several machines

A VFD is normally selected to control a motor, not to supply a general three phase workshop network. Multi motor systems require engineering review and individual motor protection.

What is the most important selection value

The motor rated current and voltage are more useful than power alone.
